I guess it's like any cultural movement that seeks more and more popular appeal. The core principles can't compete with what has mass appeal.

DRS is a good example of how it works. Overtaking in F1 was a battle of wills, and machinery. It was also quite rare.

More overtaking was demanded, and it was delivered... Now DRS overtaking is very common, very cheap and it has driven out proper overtaking entirely.

Completely agree! DRS is a great example of that historical shift, along with the current shortening (Miami) and lengthening of the DRS zones to make it more “exciting.”

...and the drivers have figured out that non-DRS passes are not worth the risk so you may as well wait for the zero risk DRS move. Therefore all really complex and planned overtaking moves are gone forever. What's the point of pulling off a great move if the driver behind can repass with leisure at the next DRS zone.
